Walkers' Guernsey team retains market leading rankings in Dispute Resolution and Insurance with 19 lawyers ranked across seven practice areas

Walkers' Guernsey team has retained its market leading rankings in Dispute Resolution and Insurance work in the latest Legal 500 guide, which has recognised 19 of the firm's Guernsey lawyers for their work across seven practice areas.

The independent directory highlights the work of five of Walkers' band-one ranked Dispute Resolution team; four lawyers in each of Walkers' Banking & Finance, Corporate and Investment Funds teams; three in the Insurance and Private Client, Trusts and Tax teams, and two in the Employment Law team.

Walkers continues to grow its team in Guernsey, which is currently celebrating its fifth anniversary, with recent arrivals including senior counsel Chris Hutley-Hurst and Alex Wickens, and associates Jessica George, Katherine Jensen, Chris Knowles, Pascalle Palmer and Marcel Treurnicht.

Fraser Hern, the head of Walkers' Channel Islands business, said: "Retaining our market-leading rankings in Dispute Resolution and Insurance and seeing more of our people recognised by Legal 500 than ever before is a clear testament to the hard work and skill of our Guernsey team after a period that has presented challenges to all businesses.

"It is particularly pleasing to see the quotes gathered by Legal 500's independent researchers, which consistently refer to our depth of knowledge and our range, and global perspective across key offshore jurisdictions.

"That global perspective is a key differentiator for us. As the largest offshore law firm we are able to leverage the expertise and experience of our expert teams across Bermuda, BVI, Cayman, Dubai, Dublin, Hong Kong, London and Singapore, and this is a point that resonates with our international client base."

The latest edition of Legal 500 recognises: Alison Ozanne (Dispute Resolution) in its Hall of Fame; Sarah Brehaut (Dispute Resolution), Kate Storey (Insurance) and Rupert Morris (Private Client, Trusts and Tax) as Leading Individuals; Zoë Hallam and Kim Paiva (Banking & Finance), Sarah Ash (Employment) as Next Generation Partners; Alex Wickens (Banking & Finance), Jessica Robinson (Corporate & Commercial), Chris Hutley-Hurst (Investment Funds), and Victoria Pratt (Employment) as Rising Stars.

In addition, Matt Sanders (Corporate), Adam Cole, Helena Lavin and Jamie Bookless (Dispute Resolution), Adam Pickering (Insurance), Rajah Abusrewil and Nitrisha Doorasamy (Private Client, Trusts and Tax) are all individually recognised by Legal 500.

19 Walkers' Jersey lawyers recognised in latest edition of Legal 500

19 Walkers' lawyers in Jersey have been recognised in the latest edition of the Legal 500 directory, which has seen the firm retain its team rankings with Hall of Fame lawyers, Leading Individuals and Next Generation Partners in each of its practice groups.

The rankings recognise more of Walkers' Jersey team than ever before, with the growing team seeing five lawyers ranked for each of its Banking & Finance, Corporate & Commercial and Investment Funds practice groups, along with four for Dispute Resolution and three for Private Client, Trusts and Tax.

The recognition from the independent researchers comes after a further year of sustained growth in Walkers' Jersey office, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. In the last 12 months the office has seen the arrivals of senior counsel Matthew Dibb, senior associates Antonia Hull and Olivia Palloch, and associates Claire Barbesol, Jenny Brunton, Marco Carossa, Luke Steele, Alice Wight and Charlotte Yates – all nine have joined Walkers from offshore competitors or UK firms.

Fraser Hern, the head of Walkers' Channel Islands business, said: "It is pleasing to see so many of our talented people recognised in this way by Legal 500, and also to see the outstanding client feedback cited by the researchers.

"This demonstrates that we have kept up the excellent levels of client service that is the Walkers hallmark, despite the disruption and changing market conditions of the last 12 months, and the growth that we have seen as we invest and recruit across our legal practice groups."

Jonathan Heaney, the managing partner of Walkers' Jersey office, added: "What sets us apart – and this is a point referenced in the client feedback – is the way that we integrate our advice across legal practice groups and offices. As the largest offshore law firm we are able to leverage the expertise and experience of our expert teams across Bermuda, BVI, Cayman, Dubai, Dublin, Hong Kong, London and Singapore, and this is a point that resonates with our international client base."

The latest edition of Legal 500 recognises: Nigel Sanders (Dispute Resolution) and Jonathan Heaney (Investment Funds) in its Hall of Fame; Alexandra Corner and Nigel Weston (Banking & Finance) and Jonathan Heaney (Corporate & Commercial) as Leading Individuals; Marc Seddon (Dispute Resolution), Robert Dobbyn (Private Client, Trusts and Tax), Dilmun Leach (Investment Funds) and Daniel Read (Employment) as Next Generation Partners; and Julia Keppe (Banking & Finance), James Turnbull (Dispute Resolution); Sevyn Kalsi (Private Client, Trusts & Tax) as Rising Stars.

In addition, Louise Hamilton and Tristan Maultby (Banking & Finance), Olivia Palloch, Christopher Reed and Tom Fothergill (Corporate & Commercial), Fraser Hern (Dispute Resolution), and Leanne Wallser and Tatiana Collins (Investment Funds) are all individually recognised by Legal 500.

Walkers London-based BVI, Bermuda & Cayman law teams retain top tier ranking in Legal 500

Walkers London office has again retained its tier-one status, in the latest edition of Legal 500, for the provision of BVI, Bermuda and Cayman law. Walkers is the largest offshore firm in London and provides time zone sensitive Bermuda, BVI and Cayman law support to clients in the EMEA region.

The rankings see office managing partner Jack Boldarin (Banking & Finance) and partner John O'Driscoll (Insolvency & Dispute Resolution) retain their Leading Individual rankings, along with Next Generation Partner Mark Galazzi and Rising Star Catherine Overton (both Banking & Finance).

There is also recognition for Walkers' London partners Matthew Bloomfield (Investment Funds), Sara Hall (Regulatory), Fraser Hern (Insolvency & Dispute Resolution), Neil McDonald (Corporate M&A), Tatziana Paraguacuto (Investment Funds) and Hughie Wong (Investment Funds) all individually recognised.

Client feedback cited by Legal 500's independent researchers stated that: "They have top-to-bottom excellence and have really invested in building a team that delivers at all stages of a matter. Their style of communication is straight up and commercial and that makes them an invaluable resource for problem solving."

Jack Boldarin said: "We are delighted to once again retain our tier-one ranking, which reflects the commitment and enthusiasm of our supremely talented colleagues over the course of what has been in some ways a challenging year for businesses of all kinds.

"The endorsements from our clients and peers is particularly pleasing, as it reflects the enormous effort and investment that has gone into recruiting and growing our London team, and ensuring that we can maintain excellent levels of client service and responsiveness at a time when premium client engagements have grown exponentially.

"As we mark our 20th anniversary here in London, it is pleasing to see independent research and testimony confirming our standing as both the largest and most preeminent offshore law firm in London."

Walkers Launches Online AML Training Solution in Bermuda

Walkers Professional Services ("WPS") has announced that it has launched an innovative e-Learning Anti-Money Laundering Training platform in Bermuda, further adding to the client focused services that WPS offers through digital means.

The Bermuda Monetary Authority ("BMA") requires regulated financial institutions to undertake Anti-Money Laundering ("AML") and Anti-Terrorist Financing training at least annually. Compliance with this requirement is assessed during a BMA onsite inspection and an annual AML audit.

The online platform enables users to access training on the AML regime through a sophisticated e-Learning module, which is regularly updated to ensure any changes to the AML regime are captured. For ease of use, the training is accessible via desktop or mobile device.

Speaking to the new product offering, Michael Wynne, Senior Vice President of WPS shared: "We are delighted to be able to offer this technology to the Bermuda market. Now more than ever, there is strong demand in the industry for a dynamic online training tool that allows users to access materials on demand. Users can move at their own pace as the training is self-administered, allowing them to fully grasp each concept and consider application of AML requirements in real-time."

WPS' ongoing investment in technology and process driven applications ensures that clients benefit from Walkers' extensive risk, regulatory and compliance expertise. The e-Learning AML Training platform is designed and administered by International Compliance Association designated compliance professionals and is fully compliant with applicable regulations and BMA guidance.

Queen's Counsel Appointment for Walkers' Colette Wilkins

A ceremony at the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands on 3 September 2021 marked the elevation of Colette Wilkins QC to the distinguished rank of Queen's Counsel.

The appointment of Queen's Counsel, or 'silks' as they are known informally on account of the silk gowns appointees are permitted to wear in Court, acknowledges ability as an advocate and seniority in the legal profession. Appointments are made on the recommendation of the Cayman Islands' judiciary to the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth office. There have been 27 Queen's Counsel appointments in the Cayman Islands since the first was made in 1982.

Colette is a highly regarded litigation attorney in the Cayman Islands, where she has practised for the past 15 years, following her early career at the English Bar. She specialises in high value financial services related litigation, asset recovery and contentious insolvency and has appeared in many of the leading cases in the Grand Court and the Court of Appeal. Colette is recognised as eminent in her field by all major independent legal directories including Chambers Global (Band 1), Legal 500 (Tier 1) and Who's Who Legal (Global Elite Thought Leader). Recent directory comments include 'Among the world’s top restructuring and insolvency minds, with peers across the globe recommending her as “an exceptional lawyer” and “a wonderful advocate with a dedicated client following" and “Colette is the creme de la creme of the Cayman Islands when it comes to asset recovery.”

Colette is the Cayman Islands representative of FraudNet, a worldwide network of lawyers under the auspices of the International Chamber of Commerce and has twice been named Cayman Islands Attorney of the Year by the Recovery and Insolvency Specialists Association. She is in much demand as a speaker at international conferences.

At the Court ceremony on Friday, Colette thanked the talented team at Walkers, saying that their work with her on many leading cases deserves much credit for this appointment.

Colette is passionate about the need for diversity in the work place and, in particular, the need to ensure greater socio-economic diversity in law. She is proud to be a long-serving member of Walkers' Training Committee which continues to work to achieve that end.

Ingrid Pierce, Global Managing Partner says "We could not be more delighted and proud of Colette's appointment as Queen's Counsel. It is richly deserved and reflects her seniority and distinction at the Bar. Colette is a role model for many young lawyers and we wish her continued success for many years to come."
