The Discrimination Landscape in Guernsey is Changing – Training to Support Employers and Service Providers

The States of Guernsey approved The Prevention of Discrimination (Guernsey), Ordinance, 2022 ("the new Discrimination Ordinance") on 30 September 2022. The new Discrimination Ordinance will largely come into force on 1 October 2023 (with some parts implemented at later dates) and will for a period of time be in force alongside Guernsey's existing Sex Discrimination (Employment) (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2005 ("SDO").

The introduction of the new Discrimination Ordinance brings significant change to Guernsey with the introduction of 5 new protected grounds – disability, carer status, religion or belief, sexual orientation and race  (with the possibility of more to follow) and new prohibited behaviours. The new Discrimination Ordinance extends beyond the field of employment to cover service providers, schools and education providers, accommodation providers, clubs and associations and voluntary groups. Remedies and awards are also changing and this new regime will also be applied to the existing SDO. Consequently there is much employers, service providers and other organisations should be doing to prepare in advance of the new legislation coming into force.

In order to support the implementation of the new Discrimination Ordinance the States of Guernsey Committee for Employment & Social Security has appointed the Consortium to deliver a comprehensive training and development programme. Walkers is a lead partner in the Consortium, and the sole law firm appointed to deliver this training. Walkers is working with The Guernsey Institute to deliver this training programme and a number of supporting partners - Equality Guernsey, GET and Focus HR.

Up until March 2023, the Consortium will be running five training courses which cover different aspects of the law.  The sessions are free to attend and each session is scheduled for 90 minutes. The in-person sessions will be held at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts and each of the sessions will also be provided online.  The sessions can be booked directly via the links below.
